Welcome at I-stay@home!

People across Europe are living longer now than ever before. The distinct needs and concerns of older people as members of society mean that demographic change is a topic with increasing importance for governments and service planners. The European Union has recognised this issue and declared 2012 to be the “European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations”. As part of its commitment, the EU agreed to part fund the I-stay@home project (2012-2015) via the European Regional Development Fund Interreg IVB programme.

I-stay@home (ICT SoluTions for an Ageing societY) involves housing providers as well as technical partners from North West Europe and aims to identify, select and test a range of affordable ICT (information communications technology) solutions that can help older people to continue living independently in their homes. The consortium partners are emphasizing aspects such as safety, health and comfort when evaluating the solutions. It is also critical that all devices, services and solutions that are chosen for testing are available at reasonable prices. All partners believe that being supported at home should not be luxury!

Once the products have been short-listed and tested, the consortium aims to publish an online reference resource that provides comprehensive information on the best smart devices and where they can be sourced.

The exchange of knowledge between partners will be fundamental to achieving the project objectives, and we hope that this approach will also build relationships and enhance the co-operation of experts between the partner countries. As a result, people from all parts of Europe will also benefit from the solutions.

The partners will together deliver four phases of work:

  1. Identify and consider the core concerns of older people
  2. Make a pre-selection of ICT based practices and services available
  3. Live test the selected solutions in about 300 homes of tenants from the participating housing organizations
  4. Integrate the products and services into the database platform and make them better available for public
